Today was the day that we had to leave this beautiful country, South Africa, behind us and return to the cold Netherlands. First, we had a meeting at the school Emil Weder, where the whole school was present. At this meeting I had to give a speech, together with Jasmin, I really don’t care to give a speech, but I didn’t know that there were 200 men, Pfff! That’s a lot. Here below is our speech!:
What did we do and how did we feel in those two weeks while we were here? Well it all started with a warm welcome of some of your students. They took the journey on them to get us from the airport. This was the first time we met some of our buddy’s, some of the friends we have made in this short time.

A lot has happened since we came here. It was a lot of good but also some bad things. But still we enjoyed every second of our time in South Africa.

The warm welcome was not only from the students, but it was also from the community of Genadendal. We arrived, and everyone was waving and welcoming us in their beautiful hometown. I think we can say this for everyone but we all felt so welcome here.

And that first Monday, the Monday morning where everyone met the buddy with whom they spend the two weeks we were here. And then again, a beautiful and wonderful welcome from all the students.

That day but also the other days at your school where always eventful. We all learned something about the South African school system and saw the differences. But we don’t want to talk about the differences, we want to talk about the things we have in common.

What we all have in common is that we wanted to learn from each other. We wanted to see our buddy’s life and what they do in their free time. And of course, every day, every trip we went on was for us another day we learned something about this special country.

We asked a couple of students that went on the trip with us to tell us a word that describes this trip. The words that came along where impressive, fun, a roller coaster, emotional, interesting, and cosy. One of the students also said that we worked together as a family and that will hopefully continue for the next trips that will come.

We learned about the country we were in and about the community of this wonderful country. As you can imagine we did miss our home. We missed our families but South Africa, our friends here showed us another home. They showed us how to feel at home. And that’s why we want to thank you for all you have done for us over those two weeks. Thank you for letting us in and showing us all you had to offer in two weeks. We saw so much, and we will never forget all the activities we did here.

Unfortunately, I could not say goodbye to Devenia, she could not attend school, but they had a solution for that, I could have a telephone one of her classmates and call her, so I could say goodbye to her. Then we had to go to the airport. Maybe for the last time in Cape Town, Genadendal, in the bus, together with fantastic people in the beautiful country South Africa. We were quite early at the airport, but yes we had WIFI, so I wasn’t bored! Then we had to go boarding and I found out that I would sit next to Zoë, near the window, seriously I was happy. The fight to Istanbul was in total 10 hours, I think that we slept for 8 hours, so the time was going very fast.
