Because we are going to South Africa, it would be handy if we had some information about South Africa. The neighbouring countries of South Africa are Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Swaziland. In South Africa, is an independent state, Lesotho. The capital city of Lesotho is Maseru, Lesotho has 1 953 070 inhabitants and its surface is 30 355 km2.
South Africa has in total 54 300 704 inhabitants and a surface of 1 219 912 km2. South Africa is a special country because it has three capital cities with each a different task: Cape Town the legislative, Pretoria the executive and Bloemfontein the judicial capital city. In South Africa, they pay with the Rand, 1 Rand = €0,0643 or in other words €1 = 15,5465 Rand.
It has in total 11 official languages: Zoeloe (22%), Xhosa (16%), African (13%), North-Sotho (9%), English (9%), Tswana (8%), South-Sotho (7%), Tsonga (4%), Swazi (3%), Venda (2%), South-Ndebele (2%). Dutch was from 1910 until 1984 an official language in South Africa. 86,4% form all the inhabitants above the 15 years old can read and write, 87% of the men and 85,7% of the women.
South Africa has three main religions: 79,7% is Christen, 1,5% Islam, 1,3% Hinduism. 15,1% says that is don’t believe, about 1,4% is it not clear. So, 82,5% believe and 16,5% don’t.
The most people know South Africa because of Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa. But maybe some other people who like history would also know that South Africa was an important country for the VOC.
South Africa has 9 provinces, West Cape is the third biggest provinces and has third most inhabitants. We will stay in Genadendal (later more information), what is in the West Cape. Cape Town is the capital city with 2 893 251 inhabitants, that is nearly the half of the whole population of West Cape (5 822 734 inhabitants) and the surface is 129 462 km2. Here are three main languages African (49,7%), Xhosa (24%) and English (20%). And 81% of all the inhabitants is Christen.
As I said we will stay in Genadendal. Genadendal has 5 663 inhabitants, the total surface is 3,97 km2. They speak for 95% African. Genadendal is in the community Theewaterskloof.
