Biography Nelson Mandela
‘During my lifetime I have combated against white and black domination. I want a democratic and free society, in which all people can live together in harmony and with equal right. This is the ideal I want to live for. But if I have to, I’m ready to die for it’

Everyone knows Nelson Mandela, but what was his background? In this article I want to give you more details about his life. Nelson Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa on the 18th of July 1918. His parents were Nkosi and Nosekeni Mandela. Nelson had in total 4 daughters, 2 sons, 4 stepchildren and 3 wives’.

Nelson Mandela combated for the black people in Africa, that’s why he was against apartheid. His vision was to stop all the apartheid, that all the citizens of Africa had equal rights and that everyone (above the 18) would have the right to vote. While he was combating, he joined the ANC which means African National Congress. The ANC was a social democratic political party. In 1994 the party began to rule on the national level. Nelson was very active in the ANC with speeches and other similar things. He worked together with Frederik Willem de Klerk. They said things that were offensive, to the government. The government didn’t like that so, the police arrested Nelson. Actually, that’s quite strange, Nelson and Frederik worked together but Nelson is arrested. The reason for this: Nelson was black, Frederik was white, there came a lawsuit against Nelson Mandela. Nelson would get the death penalty, but because of the sentence (in the beginning) he didn’t get the death penalty.

On the 12th of June 1964, he had to go Robben Island, one of the most terrible political prison of the world. The prisoners on the island were forced to work in a local limestone quarry. The prisoners were separated according to their skin colour, that means that the black prisoners received smaller cells than white and Indian people. The category of political prisoners, which Nelson Mandela belonged to, was separated, and had fewer rights. His cell was 2.4 to 2.1 meter.

11 February 1990 Nelson Mandela was free. Before Nelson went to Robben Island was decided that Nelson had to be there for his whole life, but some people became angry. The government decided that Nelson was free. Nelson Mandela was for 27 years in prison on Robben Island. After his release, he went straight to the ANC in Cape Town. He was immediately chosen as the new chairman of this party. Nelson wanted a black-and-white government. Finally, there came an election, Nelson Mandela won the election. So, Nelson Mandela became the new president of South-Africa from 1994 until 1999. This was the first election where everyone could vote.

In 1959 the island was converted into a high security prison of the South African apartheid regime. Now there are tours for the tourists by ex-prisoners. The trip to Robben Island will be by boat, from the Nelson Mandela in the port in Cape Town.

In 1993 Nelson Mandela and Frederik de Klerk won the Nobel Prize for peace. They won the Nobel Prize because of their work the end of the apartheid and laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa. On the 5th of December 2013, President Zuma made announced that Nelson Mandela was died at the age of 95 at his home in Johannesburg. Sunday the 8th of December was declared a national day "day of prayer and reflection."

I taught it would be nice to find some information about Nelson Mandela, and I think it succeeded!
